Das Eichhörnchen - Sciurus vulgaris - ist die einzige bei uns einheimische Eichhörnchen-Art. Insbesondere in England und Italien wurde das aus Nordamerika stammende Grauhörnchen (Sciurus carolinensis) angesiedelt. Sieht man bei uns in Deutschland gräulich gefärbte Tiere, sind das jedoch bislang Tiere von Sciurus vulgaris im Winterfell - dieses fällt deutlich dunkler aus als das rote Sommerfell. Als typischer Kulturfolger kann das Eichhörnchen auch inmitten unserer Ortschaften beobachtet werden. Das hier gezeigte Präparat ist ein ausgewachsenes weibliches Tier im Winterkleid.
